THE
AUVERGNE.
Situated
in the very heart of France, the Auvergne is largely unknown to
the English tourist. It is one of the most peaceful and unspoilt
regions that compares favourably with the better known but more
frequented Ardèche and Provence areas, which lie a little further
to the south.
Whether
your tastes are for rambling, cycling or exploring by car, the Auvergne
has plenty to offer. Beautiful old churches abound. There are châteaux
and museums (including the famous Richard de Bas paper museum where
hand-made paper is still produced as it was in the XIV century from
pure cotton material – ideal for watercolour painting). The
countryside is rich in wild flowers. There are abundant species
of birds including magnificent birds of prey. Deer and wild boar
still inhabit the forests and can be seen by those who tread quietly!
In season, mushrooms of almost every conceivable variety grow in
profusion. There are peaceful lakes, lively rivers and streams,
forest walks and countryside rambles. The recommended circuits are
well looked after and are clearly signposted. They range in difficulty
and duration but are safe for all the family. The beautiful views
are there to be enjoyed whatever your mode of transport. Numerous
fêtes and festivals take place throughout the season. There are
opportunities for hang-gliding and para-gliding close to Ambert
and the local airport offers trial flights in a light aircraft.
